Just spent a wonderful vacation with my 14 year old son on Guanaja Island in the Bay Islands of Honduras. Beginning our stay on a private island located off of the main island of Guanaja at Fly Fish Guanaja. Beautifully situated under coconut palms and surrounded by aqua blue waters filled with thousands of fish, a real fisherman's paradise. Set up as an estate/fish camp like something out of a Hemmingway novel. Food was plentiful and delicious. We found the entire staff very friendly and helpful.
During our stay we took a trip to the Northside of Guanaja to a place called Michael Rock to snorkel. On our arrival we witnessed a scuba class being conducted to novice students. As we snorkeled around the class we were literally "blown away" by the variety and amount of marine life teeming around us. Everyone in the class were having an absolute ball as was their diving guide Brian Rowland. My son was completely enthralled by this experience so much that he asked me if we could try it out. Brian was more than happy to accommodate us. Within an hour of starting my son and I were actually swimming,(diving) amongst the coral reef with the class. Completely different experience from anything we have ever done and nothing to compare it with. I mean we were having the time of our lives both my son and I enjoying this sensation together.
For any parents out there all to familiar with modern life's hectic schedules, x-boxes, cell phones and all the other distractions which do not promote family activities or bonding experiences, this is something you have to do! You will never hear truer words.
Brian is certainly a unique guy with a gift of patience and skills and the enthusiasm to rev anyone up to the challenge.
Guanaja is a great place to bring a family to do many family-based activities. We love fishing, boating , snorkeling and now scuba diving.
